“I’m feeling myself. I’m feeling myself. I’m feeling my…” The song “Feeling Myself” by Nicki Minaj and Beyoncé has become my theme song, or should I say chorus so far this year! In 2015, I’ll be turning 30; and for the first time, I feel like I’m firing on all cylinders! But here’s the kicker… I don’t have everything together!! I still wonder if that right man is going to come along and sweep me off my feet or if I’m going to lose these 10 or so pounds I’ve been trying to lose for years! LOL! I’m not yet an expert in my new career; I haven’t quite hit the debt-free mark; and the list could go on and on. But no matter how long the list, I’m still feeling myself! And for me, that’s the beauty of it all! There was a time that if all aspects of my life weren’t “perfect,” I wasn’t fully satisfied. So now, to feel such contentment exactly where I am in life, is an extremely exhilarating feeling!
So I’ll let you in on a little secret…I’ve always worried about not being able to measure up. Measure up to people around me or to the perceived expectations of family, friends, etc. As a result of this “measuring up” complex, I would play the back. I would be slow to speak my opinion or voice my ideas. I would quickly accept the supporting role and shy away from being the leading lady. All this was done in an effort to prevent me from being exposed…exposed for not knowing and not being everything that was expected of me.
What I’m learning day by day is that it’s OK to not have everything figured out. It’s OK to be “imperfect.” That’s what makes life exciting…enjoying the journey of unlocking the mysteries of the complicated melody that we call our lives. So I’ll leave you with this…
Don’t dim your light in fear that your flame may not shine as bright as others. Light will always drive out darkness, no matter the size of the flame. Remember, people may not appreciate your light, but they can never deny its presence!
What’s been holding you back from “feeling yourself?”
Enjoy one of my FAVORITE poems and let it inspire you to move past those dimmers and SHINE BRIGHT!
Our Deepest Fear
By Marianne Williamson
Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light, not our darkness
That most frightens us.
We ask ourselves
Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?
Actually, who are you not to be?
You are a child of God.
Your playing small
Does not serve the world.
There’s nothing enlightened about shrinking
So that other people won’t feel insecure around you.
We are all meant to shine,
As children do.
We were born to make manifest
The glory of God that is within us.
It’s not just in some of us;
It’s in everyone.
And as we let our own light shine,
We unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.
As we’re liberated from our own fear,
Our presence automatically liberates others.
